Removing red or blonde hair with a laser is difficult, and removing white or gray hair is impossible. A person with dark or tanned skin is at greater risk of burns, scarring, and pigment changes because the pigment absorbs the energy from the laser.

Terminal hair is coarse hair that grows on the head, beard, underarms, groin, arms, and legs. Velus hair is soft, downy hair on the rest of the body. Laser hair removal works best on terminal hair because it is thicker and dark and absorbs laser energy well.

Hair grows in three stages: anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Laser hair removal only works on hair in the anagen phase. Different hairs are in different stages at the same time, which is why multiple laser treatments are needed for complete and long-lasting hair removal.

The effectiveness of laser hair removal depends on skin type, hair color, body area, laser power, and wavelength. Treatments are safe and comfortable if all of these factors are taken into account and the skin is cooled during and after treatment. “In-motion” technology allows the laser to move continuously during treatment, which makes it quick and virtually pain-free.
