Miramar Labs, a privately owned global medical device company founded in 2006 to create energy modalities for the field of dermatology, announced in July that its miraDry® System has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat unwanted underarm hair. It has been shown to provide permanent reduction of underarm hair of all colors. miraDry® is the only treatment approved by the FDA to treat underarm hair of all colors and to permanently reduce underarm sweat.
miraDry® uses microwave technology. Unlike laser hair removal systems, miraWave® does not require a chromophore to remove hair. It can therefore be used on all hair colors, including light hair, and all skin colors. In studies, miraWave® has achieved a 70 percent reduction in underarm hair regardless of color based on a non-optimized treatment protocol. Miramar Labs has improved the protocol since then and expects to see an increase in hair reduction.
After the miraWave® was approved by the FDA, Miramar Labs introduced miraSmooth™ treatment, which became available in select markets in August. miraSmooth™ enables patients to reduce both unwanted underarm hair and excessive sweating. These treatments are options for patients who were not candidates for laser hair removal procedures.
miraSmooth™ uses a handheld device to emit microwaves that focus directly on the hair follicle or sweat gland. The treatment has only earned FDA approval to treat underarms, but it is expected to be expanded to treat other areas in the near future. Some swelling and pain are possible after treatment, but they usually subside within a few days.
