No one wants to look older, but unfortunately, age, the environment, and lifestyle habits take their toll on our skin. Here are some treatments you can try at home or at your dermatologist’s office to get younger looking skin. You don’t need to do all of these to turn back the hands of time. In many cases, less is more.
Wear sunscreen every day, year-round, regardless of the weather, to prevent wrinkles and age spots. Reapply it at least every two hours and more often if you are swimming or sweating. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and broad spectrum protection. If you are wearing makeup, you can use a mineral powder that contains SPF for touchups.
Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that come in creams or gels. They prevent collagen from breaking down and promote the turnover of skin cells. Retinoids can also treat and prevent acne. Prescription retinoids, such as tretinoin and Retin-A, are more effective than over-the-counter varieties. Use only a small amount. Your skin will probably peel at first. If you have sensitive skin, use retinoids only every other night.
Hydration is important as you get older. Use a moisturizer every day, but don’t overspend on expensive brands that are likely no more effective than ones sold at a drugstore.
You can significantly reduce lines and improve your skin’s tone and texture by getting a medium depth chemical peel every four to six months. You will look and feel like you have a bad sunburn for about three to five days. It is a good idea to get a chemical peel in the winter because you will need to avoid sun exposure for a few days.
Laser treatments can smooth your skin’s surface and reduce lines and wrinkles. They vary in terms of intensity and effects. Discuss options with your dermatologist.
Botox® injections can treat and prevent wrinkles. Botox® works best between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and in the forehead. You will need to repeat the procedure every three to six months to maintain the effects. Be sure to get Botox® injections from a reputable and qualified provider.
Fillers can increase volume in the lower portion of your face, especially around your nose and mouth. Results can last for six months to three years, depending on the type of filler you choose.
