CoolSculpting® – Pre & Post Treatment Instructions
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that delivers controlled cooling to target and break down fat cells just beneath the skin. It is intended to improve the appearance of localized fat bulges, not as a treatment for obesity or a weight-loss solution. CoolSculpting does not replace traditional methods such as diet, exercise, or surgical procedures like liposuction.
How CoolSculpting Works
Clinical studies show that CoolSculpting can break down fat cells in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, flanks, and under the chin (submental area). After treatment, the body naturally processes and eliminates the damaged fat cells over time. Visible results vary from person to person.
What to Expect During Treatment
- The suction pressure of a vacuum applicator may cause sensations of deep pulling, tugging, or pinching.
- A surface applicator may cause pressure.
- You may experience intense cold, stinging, tingling, aching, or cramping during the first few minutes—these usually subside as the area becomes numb.
- Temporary side effects can include dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, flushing, sweating, or fainting during or immediately after treatment.
- The treated area may feel stiff, appear pale or red, and have transient blanching (temporary whitening of the skin) that typically resolves within minutes.
- Bruising, swelling, cramping, and discomfort are possible and may last for 1–2 weeks.
- After submental area treatment (under the chin), you may feel a sense of fullness in the back of the throat.
Potential Risks
While uncommon, the following side effects can occur:
- Paradoxical Hyperplasia: Rarely, the treated area may gradually develop a firm enlargement months after treatment. This will not resolve on its own and may require surgical removal.
- Treatment Area Indentation: Rarely, excessive fat removal can cause indentation in the treated area.
- In rare cases, darker skin color, hardness, discrete nodules, frostbite, hernia, or worsening of an existing hernia may occur, sometimes requiring surgery.
Expected Results
- Some changes may be visible in as little as 3 weeks.
- The most dramatic results typically appear between 1–3 months after treatment.
- The body will continue to process and eliminate fat cells for up to 4 months after the procedure.
Post-Treatment Care
Immediately After CoolSculpting
- Most patients can resume normal activities right away.
- Redness in the treated area may last for a few hours, and in rare cases, up to 2 weeks.
- Temporary swelling, itching, tingling, numbness, tenderness, cramping, aching, bruising, and/or skin sensitivity are common and typically resolve within 1–2 weeks. Contact your provider if symptoms persist or worsen.
Over the Following Months
- Expect a gradual reduction in fat thickness in the treated area.
- Maintain a stable weight with healthy diet and exercise to maximize and preserve results.
- In rare cases, side effects such as skin darkening, hardness, nodules, freeze burn, enlargement of the treated area, or hernia may occur and require medical evaluation.
Next Steps
- A follow-up appointment is recommended to review your results and discuss whether additional treatments may help you reach your desired outcome.
