You're ready to turn back time a little and book your appointment for a BOTOX® consultation. You want to make sure you have all of your questions ready, including any unpleasantness you can expect after the procedure. Our faces are important, often making the first impression on people we meet. It's natural to question what side effects any cosmetic procedures may have on your appearance.
Why BOTOX®?
Cosmetic treatments such as BOTOX® and facial fillers help peel off the layers to achieve or maintain a youthful look.
BOTOX® treatment is approved by the FDA and considered to be safe for cosmetic procedures and treating other conditions such as:
- Excessive sweating
- Chronic headaches
- Overactive bladder
- Lazy eye
- Neck spasms
However, like any other medication or course of treatment, BOTOX® injections have side effects that range from mild to severe. Some of the effects that are most prevalent after BOTOX® treatment include:
Mild Swelling or Bruising
BOTOX® injections are administered via a needle. During the injection process, the needle can puncture surrounding blood vessels, causing mild pain and bruising. In most cases, the bruising is minor and only takes a few days to heal and fade away.
Headaches
This is common among patients who receive BOTOX® injections in the forehead. Anecdotal studies show that the headaches may be a result of over contraction of specific facial muscles. The pain often resolves with over-the-counter painkillers.
Drooping Eyelids
BOTOX® injections in the face can sometimes travel to the surrounding facial muscles and tissues. When the contents get to the upper eyelid, it may weaken the muscles holding up the eyelid, causing a droopy eyelid.
The effects typically resolve in 4-6 weeks or you can consider getting more BOTOX® injections to counteract the effects.
Nausea and Constipation
According to a report by NCBI, BOTOX® injections cause gastrointestinal issues that can range from mild to severe. From the study, 10% of patients who received BOTOX® treatment reported symptoms of nausea, constipation, and mild discomfort in the bowel area. The symptoms typically resolve in a matter of days.
When To Consult a Professional
While adverse reactions to BOTOX® are rare, you should seek medical attention immediately for any severe reactions.
