The human face has 42 different muscles. And while the jury is out on how many muscles we use to smile, one thing is true - years of expressing happiness can lead to wrinkles we nickname "laugh lines". Since the FDA approved cosmetic injectables, there has been an increase in the number of people getting cosmetic treatments to improve their appearance. There are several treatment options for facial wrinkles, including BOTOX® and Dysport®. Unless you're an expert, it's difficult to tell two treatments apart, given that they're both used to prevent and reduce facial creasing.
To help you figure out the right treatment option for you, we'll do a breakdown of how the two treatments compare.
What Is Dysport®?
Dysport® treatment contains a toxin, abobotulinumtoxinA, which is used to treat glabellar lines. The drug works by temporarily decreasing the movement of muscles in targeted areas to eliminate or reduce wrinkles and fine lines.
Dysport® is also used to treat other medical conditions such as:
- Muscle spasms
- Lower limb muscle spasticity in children
- Cervical dystonia
What Is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a botulinum toxin injection that smooths out wrinkles by preventing muscle contraction. The drug works by blocking signals from the nerves to the targeted muscles to create a smooth and even appearance on the skin's surface.
Differences and Similarities
BOTOX® and Dysport® are neurotoxins that belong to the same class of drugs called neuromuscular blockers. Both treatments cause muscle contractions and have an equally lasting effect. However, they differ in composition and usage.
The differences between BOTOX® and Dysport® are:
- Dysport® is primarily used in the treatment of glabellar lines, while BOTOX® works for practically all facial wrinkles.
- Dysport® has smaller molecules which enable it to spread easily and faster when injected into the skin compared to BOTOX®.
- BOTOX® has larger molecules which increase its potency. For a treatment that requires one dose of BOTOX®, you'll need 3 doses of Dysport® to achieve the same results.
- Dysport® results appear in 2-3 days, while the full effect of BOTOX® treatment can take up to a week to see results.
Which One Is Right for You?
According to a study by the National Library of Medicine, 88% of people who used either BOTOX® or Dysport® reported positive changes within 30 days.
Dysport® is recommended for treating larger areas like the forehead and glabellar wrinkles because it dissolves quicker. On the other hand, BOTOX® works better for more severe wrinkles in smaller areas such as around the eyes and laugh lines.
