If you're ready for your first BOTOX® treatment, then you should also know exactly what to do to ensure quick recovery and the best results possible. BOTOX® treatment is safe and approved by the FDA but some patients experience adverse effects of BOTOX® treatment due to a lack of effective aftercare. An initial consultation prior to treatment will ensure you're a fit candidate and help you prepare for the procedure.
What Happens During a BOTOX® Procedure?
BOTOX® treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that doesn't require anesthesia. During the procedure, your physician will inject small doses of BOTOX® into specific facial muscles. Your physician may ask you to flex your facial muscles to find the best position for the injections.
While you may experience mild discomfort, it's important to refrain from taking painkillers before or after the procedure. Painkillers are mild blood thinners and may increase your chances of bruising and swelling or worsening bruises if they occur.
What to Expect After a BOTOX® Procedure
BOTOX® procedures take just a few minutes, although it takes about 2 weeks to experience the full effects of the treatment. Within the first 30 minutes after the procedure, you may experience the following symptoms:
- Mild pain or discomfort around the injection area
- Redness
- Mild swelling
- Bruising
While bruising during BOTOX® procedures is rare, it's no cause for alarm and the symptoms resolve in a few days.
BOTOX® Aftercare Instructions
The face is one of the most delicate and sensitive areas of the skin. After BOTOX® treatment, the sensitivity increases. It's important to exercise proper care to minimize any side effects of BOTOX® treatment.
Here are some aftercare tips to help you achieve great results after your BOTOX® treatment:
- Exercise your facial muscles an hour after treatment to help integrate the treatment into your muscles.
- Avoid touching your face within the first 4 hours of treatment to prevent the pain worsening or discomfort on the injection site. Touching your face may also exert pressure on your facial muscles, causing the treatment to shift from the injected muscles.
- Avoid strenuous physical activities or exposure to excessive heat, i.e. sauna, hot tub, to prevent a rise in blood pressure. Bruising after treatment can occur due to increased blood pressure.
